Glass Blowing

I have to say, this whole glass blowing goal was one I had almost given up on. There were no studios in Utah that taught it, and all the classes I could find other places seemed to be whole 5-week courses that I wasn't interested in doing. I mean, I wanted to try glass blowing but not THAT bad. Not enough to pay a couple of thousand dollars to do it!

But luckily, I found one place in Cali that gives one day classes, and that's what I did last Saturday. It was absolutely amazing! They give you these little glass stick tube thingies about 10 inches long with a round part at the end. Then, you lit this torch and literally spun the end of the glass (the round part) by the flame. You worked it in closer and closer to the center of the flame, watching it heat up until it was literally orange and almost molten looking. Here is our teacher, Kevin, demonstrating:

It was so crazy!!! Then you moved the end of the glass to your mouth and blew through the tube, expanding the glass. We weren't advanced enough to do amazing shapes, we just made Christmas ornaments. But we were taught how to add color to them, to draw on them, and to do these cool spindly things on the inside. It was so fun!!! You can see a couple of completed ones here ... well, sort of. This is before we cut off their stems:
