Rent a Private Island/Get Married
About that private island...
Our tour guide's name was JL and he was quite a hoot. He had so much energy. The boat ride was so beautiful, and they took us snorkeling on several stops on the way out to the island. Once we were there, we took a shower and that was fun too cause it is a tiny small private island and they had run out of shower water, so we got to use cold water from a bucket.
Getting ready for the wedding was fun too, cause there was no lights lol. But I managed to get a little bit of makeup on and the dress, and the place was really so beautiful. The other main staff member we loved was named David, but they just called him Chef, and he prepared Chicken Adobo, some kind of Tilapia fish or something that is the most expensive in the Phillipines, prawns, and they also gave us white wine and cake. They were having issues with the radio so we got to listen to Journey and Styx while we enjoyed our dinner lololol. And below is our only, spectacularly shot wedding photo in the dark.
We escaped to the beach and said our vows and exchanged rings under the most beautiful stars I have even seen. I didn’t even know the sky could look like that. Seriously. These remote islands were two hours out from anywhere. I cried when Vinh said his vows. They were really beautiful. He is a better writer than I am!
The lodge itself was freaking hot so we wanted to move out to the beach, but though it was cool out there the wind was freaking me out so we moved back inside. That is the only complaint I had, it was truly camping conditions in the sleeping sense of the word!
The next day we slept in, and they presented us with a nice breakfast of mango pancakes, fresh coconuts, and chocolate syrup. It was really awesome actually. We were on this private island with our own private chef, and they would get creative about the setup… one morning they setup the spread right on the beach, another morning it was by the hammocks, another day they laid out palm fronds, but they always gave us delicious food and more than we can eat. We ate lobster, crab, shrimp, tuna, etc. and it was so fresh and made so well by the chef... not a seafood lover, I actually enjoyed it!!! The chef was so cute too, he even had a little chef outfit like he was on Food Network or something, and he would come out and present his dishes. And if we even looked at them they would come running over asking if we needed anything.
We did a lot of snorkeling on this trip. Holy moley. Saw some beautiful corals, and fish, but I did get stung by something I think the first day out… I had this triangle scar thingy on my back that wasn’t going away. When we got back to El Nido I made a beeline for the pharmacist, cause there they are practically doctors and they dole out all sorts of meds.
Our last day the crew started opening up a little bit on the way home. On the island the whole time it was like we were royalty, we couldn’t get them to sit with us or anything, but they invited us to karaoke and they even snorkeled with us. We were laughing cause I panicked and mistook this garbage bag for a jellyfish. We snorkeled in the clearest waters in the world, I didn’t realize how amazing the reefs there were!
I did also spend a lot of time in a straw hammock between two trees, reading my book. Honestly, the decor and the general feel of this leg of the trip was like Tarzan. :)
This was the most memorable wedding I could have asked for. And two incredible checkmarks off the life list!
